CPU Benchmark Results

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Today i will post some CPU Benchmark results. Benchmark was performed using ubench. I know that it’s not ideal CPU benchmarking tool, main idea was to get some relative results. Benchmark was done on different servers models, from DELL PowerEdge 860 to 2950. Following CPU’s used:

  • Dual Core Xeon 3050
  • Dual Core Xeon 5110
  • Quad Core Xeon L5320
  • Quad Core Xeon X3220
  • Quad Core Xeon E5420

Here is test results:

Dual Monitors HOWTO

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

Few weeks ago I became owner of new 22 inch monitor Samsung SyncMaster 225BW. I has plan to sell my old 19 inch HP1905, but today i decide to try dual monitor setup on my desktop PC. I’ve spent about 3 hours to get everything work and now I’m fully confident that two monitors are better than one.

There is a lot of guides and a few ways how-to configure multi monitor systems under Linux. Most of time i have try follow guides to get my system working, but reading documentation is always better ;-). Below you can find some tips about dual monitor setup. This post is not complete HOWTO, but maybe you can find some answers

Dell SAS 5/i poor performance

Saturday, March 3rd, 2007

This story begins about 3 months ago, when we have received first server from new Dell’s server line (PowerEdge 1950/2950). That server was a Dell PowerEdge 1950 with one Dual Core Xeon 5110 and two SATA drives connected to integrated controller. That server (in my mind) may be a good replacement for old PowerEdge 850 servers line. In a few weeks after first server delivered to our customer we have noticed about poor IO performance. I have made a few tests with bonnie++, and tests results was very terrible. There was about 30% difference in IO peformance between Dell 850, Dell 1950. Even my home PC with IDE drive was faster.First i have changed OS from FreeBSD 6.2 to Debian testing/unstable - results was same. Googling was a second step but there is not a lot of info about Dell 1950 performance. I have found only 2 posts on boards, but that posts was without replys. With all that info (bonnie test results and two posts on boards) i have write e-mail to Dell. In their reply they asked my to perform some tests with IOMeter using attached profile. Here is some info about test systems:

Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 - first 1TB hard drive

Sunday, January 7th, 2007

2 days ago first 1TB hard drive introduced by Hitachi. This drive will be available for end-users in the first quarter of 2007.

This dirve, like all 750GB models will use PMR (perpendicular magnetic recording) technology. Seems like this technology has very big potential. PMR allow to store 1000 Gbit/square inch (old longitudinal recording technology has only 200Gbit/square inch). Max drive size based on “old” technology is 500GB so, in theory, maximum for PMR based drives is around 2.5TB. I think we will see 2TB+ drives in next 2 years.
